Where to send it

Send it to whoever can actually take the page down. In order of how well it usually works:

• •The site itself, if it lists a DMCA or copyright contact. Look for a "DMCA", "Copyright" or "Contact" link in the footer.
• •The company hosting the site. A WHOIS or hosting lookup on the domain shows who that is, and most hosts publish an abuse email address.
• •Google and Bing, separately, to have the page removed from search results. That does not delete the page, but it stops people finding it, and it works even when the site ignores you.

Keep a copy of everything you send and the date you sent it. If the content is still up after a week or two, send it again, and go to the host if you started with the site.

What makes a notice valid

A DMCA notice has to identify the work, identify the copy, give your contact details, and include two statements: that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised, and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or act for them. It also has to be signed; a typed name counts. The notice above includes all of these, and marks in capitals anything you have not filled in yet.

The DMCA is a US law, but it is the standard process across the internet, including for sites run from the UK and Europe. Almost every host and search engine accepts notices in this form.

Before you send it

• •Only send it for content you own. A false notice can be challenged, and the perjury statement is there for a reason.
• •Link to the exact page carrying your content, not the site homepage. A host cannot act on "somewhere on this site".
• •Expect your details to be passed on. Sites often forward notices to the person who posted the content, and some notices are published in public databases.
• •If the poster sends a counter-notice, the content can be restored unless you take legal action. That is rare with leak sites, but worth knowing.
